I know! It’s been forever since I’ve sent out an update! I got sick over the holidays, I moved from New York to Southern California (where I grew up) with my fiancée, and I was just generally busy running my company Octane AI where we work with 1,000+ Shopify merchants.
But! Don’t worry! This update is full of information that was worth the wait.
I’ve made meaningful progress on my TikTok account and I’m going to break down how I more than doubled my following from 330k to 710k over the past few months.
I was having a tough time for a bit trying to diversify my content and grow, but I broke through finally and I’ve been taking off! Excited to share my new insights with you.
p.s. Thanks to everyone who has emailed me to say hi! I love hearing from you!
Ready? Let’s do this.
In my last @mattcatbat update I talked about:
How I grew from 145k followers to 330k.
My frustration that the only content I could get to go viral was mind reading videos. Mind reading videos are very one dimensional and was limiting me in my ability to create fresh content (I just kept making the same mind reading video over and over… and over).
My experience broadcasting live on TikTok.
I was curious about trying to collect email addresses from my followers so that I had good way to contact them about announcements.
What we’re going to cover today:
My TikTok stats.
My breakthrough to a new type of content!
A complete breakdown of the 73 new videos I posted that helped me grow from 330k followers to 710k followers in 78 days (almost one video a day!).
My TikTok Stats Update (@mattcatbat)
Stats are from January 23, 2020 compared to stats from November 5th, 2019. My account was created on August 7th, 2019.
Followers: 713,838 (+376,242)
Video Views (Past 28 Days): 4,096,061 (-7,225,572)
Profile Views (Past 28 Days): 92,254 (-159,881)
Days on TikTok: 169
p.s. The reason my views over past 28 days has gone down is because I’ve been focused on figuring out new types of content instead of just making the same mind reading video over and over.
TikTok Video Breakdown - 73 Videos
Since my last update I have posted a whopping 73 new videos on my TikTok account. My big goal was to find a new niche of content that supported an endless amount of new video ideas (vs mind reading videos which only offer one type of video), and I’m excited to say that I was successful!
p.s. I upgraded my video set up! I bought a bendy arm iPhone holder ($13.99) and a small ring light ($25.99). I also bought a set of Micron pens! This has greatly improved the quality of my videos.
You can visually see that in the first set of videos (the bottom three rows) I’m all over the place, and then I start to get traction with drawing tutorial videos and I start focusing on that niche from that point onward.
I am no longer a one trick mind reading pony. I am now, as TikTok would call it, CEO of doodling.
Like in the last update, I thought it would be helpful to drop all of these videos into a spreadsheet so that we could see what patterns we can see.
To make things easier to browse, and in case you want to do any data crunching of your own, I am making my spreadsheet publicly available via Google Sheets: @mattcatbat's TikTok Stats via TheForYouPage.com (by Matt Schlicht)

Here are some interesting observations from the stats and the spreadsheet:
Mind reading videos had the highest average views per video (316,237) and the highest average distribution on the for you page (51%). We already knew these perform well, so this isn’t surprising, but the downside to these videos is they are all almost identical in content.
Drawing tutorial videos brought in the most number of total views (5,595,509) and ranked #2 for highest average view count per video (186,516). Considering that this is across 30 drawing tutorial videos I would say I’m really happy with the results. This is especially encouraging because not only were there 30 videos that did well, but it was 30 videos about 30 different things to draw (as opposed to the mind reading videos which are all basically recreations of one another).
Videos that included my face got a total of 556,966 views. This is up from 136,500 views in the previous batch of videos with my face from my last update. Nobody has recognized me on the street yet, but I’m making progress on including my face as part of the @mattcatbat brand. This is something I will be putting a lot more focus on moving forward as I think its an important part of being successful on TikTok and can open up even more types of content I can create.
15.9% of viewers who watched a drawing tutorial went on to like the video, where only 10.6% of mind reading viewers liked the video. Drawing tutorials also performed better than mind reading videos on shares and duets, but mind reading videos did way better on comments (1.5% vs 0.12%). Mind reading videos got on the for you page (shown to people who aren’t my followers) almost twice as much as my drawing tutorial videos, and it seems that comments could be a huge reason for this. I will need to experiment to see how I can encourage comments on my drawing tutorial videos so that I can increase distribution to the for you page and see if I can get my average views per video to surpass the mind reading videos.
Moving forward:
I want to increase the number of views I get that include my face (so that I can increase my brand).
I want to get verified!
I want to hit 1 million followers!
I want to figure out how to increase the number of comments I get on drawing tutorial videos with the hopes that this will increase distribution on the for you page.
I hope that this update was helpful! Please let me know if there are any questions you have. I do this for fun and I’m happy to share what I know with all of you.
Happy new year!
